Heart Mamas – this one is for YOU

It is Day 3 of Congenital Heart Defect Awareness week and I am excited to share this next blog post.  I recently met Nicolle through a heart moms group through Facebook after inquiring about fellow heart moms in the Springfield area.  She has three beautiful children, one of which is a heart warrior.  Nicolle decided to go a different route than the previsou guest posts.  If you are a heart mama, go ahead and grab a tissue for this one.   – Sara

A Tribute to Heart Moms

This month, I’ve been focusing my thoughts and efforts into “Heart Month” where I’ve been advocating and raising awareness for congenital heart defects, such an important job when our child’s illness can seem so invisible and so unknown, even though it is such a common and many
 times serious disease.
But, behind every amazing heart hero, and behind every heart angel, there is a mom who doesn’t rest until she is sure her child is getting the best care possible. Heart Moms are heroes too, and heart moms, your hard work does not unnoticed.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, you sat vigil beside your child’s bed while you, just hours or days before, had given birth. There was no time to rest and recover. You hit the ground running and made sure your baby knew you were there, fighting for them.2
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you jumped into the medical world with both feet. You spent hours researching your baby’s diagnosis, researching surgical options, statistics, the best surgeon, the best hospital.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you were strong for your baby when you handed your tiny baby over to the surgeon, not knowing the outcome.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you didn’t give up hope on the darkest of days.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you stayed strong during every prod and poke and reintubation.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you held on to faith when your baby was on ECMO.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you know every med your child is on, its purpose and its dosage and strength by heart.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you took “Nursing 101” with such grace in the step-down unit. NG tubes, feeding pumps, fortifying formula, dressing changes, trach changes, measuring urine output and Lovenox shots no longer faze you.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you can replace that NG tube in your sleep.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you know how to carry the car seat in one hand and drag the oxygen tank behind you, all while wearing the feeding pump backpack

Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you are who the doctors look to to see how your baby is doing. You are so good about watching for blue lips, feeding intolerance, shortness of breath, low oxygen saturations, swelling…-you know your baby better than anyone else.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because when the pediatrician thinks your baby is fine, you don’t give up until you get an answer- heart mama instinct is always right.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you don’t mind calling the pharmacy every week renewing medications, calling the doctor when you are out of refills and fighting with insurance when they refuse to cover it.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you can split yourself into so many pieces, you do a great job being a momma to your heart hero’s siblings, being a nurse to your baby, being a wife, keeping up with the day to day- and you never complain.
Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because you were randomly selected to be part of the “Heart Mom Club” but you do it with pride. You open up your hearts to newcomers to the club, and give them hope, you even find yourself checking up on their caringbridge and Facebook pages. You have cried with them and rejoiced with them.

Heart mamas, YOU are amazing, because if it wasn’t for you, these heart warriors wouldn’t be doing as well as they are. Behind every heart warrior is an amazing mom, cheering them on.
Heart mamas, THANK YOU for your love, dedication, bravery, strength and diligence. YOU are amazing.
